How to Enter
Welcome to Sydney Creative Writing Competition 2024!
The competition is currently open to all students of Y6-Y11 in two categories with different themes to choose from.
All the submissions will be judged by Mr. Rowan Callick OBE, a renowned award-winning journalist, editor and writer.
All the winners will receive awards from Australian Dollar $100 to $300 depending on the places.
Before entering, please read the entry instructions below carefully
Eligibility
- Current students enrolled in Australia from Year 6-11. Home school students are welcome too. And,
- All the writing work must be original, written in English and hasn’t been published before. And,
- With parents or guardian’s permission to enter.

Writing Prompts
Year 6-8 Category
You can choose any from the following three prompts:
- Your most embarrassing or frightening moment
- Write about a friend or family member you especially love or value, and say why they are important to you.
- If you were the head teacher of your school, how would you run the school?
Maximum 500 words.
Year 9-11 Category
You can choose any from the following three prompts:
- Describe your very first childhood memory, and say why that especially stuck in your mind
- What would you do on your perfect day?
- If you were the Chief Executive Officer of a global social media platform, what would you do?
Maximum 650 words.
Prize Money
$1,800 in total + future benefits
Year 6-8 Category
First Prize (1 writer)
$300 + 30% discount to join Rowan Callick’s workshop in Sydney in 2024 ( to be applied on one workshop registration)
Second Prize (1 writer)
$150 + 20% discount to join Rowan Callick’s workshop in Sydney in 2024 ( to be applied on one workshop registration)
Third Prize (3 writers)
$100 each + 10% discount to join Rowan Callick’s workshop in Sydney in 2024 ( to be applied on one workshop registration)
Year 9-11 Category

- former senior writer with TIME magazine
- An Industry Fellow at Griffith University’s Asia Institute and a member of the Advisory Boards of the National Foundation for Australia China Relations, La Trobe University’s Asia Institute and its China Studies Department, and the University of Technology Sydney’s Australia China Relations Institute. He is a governor of the Foundation for Development Cooperation, and a fellow of the Australian Institute of International Affairs.

- Engaging expression for readers
- Descriptive language and good diction
- Grammar
- Within the limit of words
